澳大利亚肥皂剧《邻居》（Neighbours）由FremantleMedia公司制作，是澳大利亚最成功的电视连续剧之一，也是澳大利亚制作时间最长的电视剧，它从1985年3月18日开始播放以来，直到21世纪一十年代仍在继续录制、播放。在澳大利亚的播出时间是每晚六点半，每集22分钟。

故事发生的地点设在墨尔本市的一个虚构的郊区埃林斯堡（Erinsborough）的拉姆西街道（Ramsay Street）上的六个住户，故事涉及感情纠葛、邻里关系、家庭纠纷以及关系到这几户居民的其它种事件。

1980年12月8日晚，纽约当曼哈顿区的达科塔公寓发生了惊世骇俗的一幕：摇滚史上最著名的明星-前"披头士"乐队主唱约翰・列农身中四弹倒在了血泊里。杀害他的枪手名叫马克・大卫・查普曼。

在各式各样对暗杀背后原因的揣测中，一位名叫芬顿・布雷斯勒的英国记者提出的"阴谋论"十分引人注目。

芬顿・布雷斯勒经过8年的调查采访，搜集和摘录了大量相关的档案资料，于1989年出版了《谁杀了约翰・列农》一书。他认为，这次暗杀并不是一次简单的个人过激行为，而是一出精心策划的阴谋，并笔锋尖锐地将矛头指向了"某些极端保守的右翼势力"。在书中他写道："马克・查普曼，他只是被许多想杀害列侬的人挑出来的牺牲品。"他指出，马克・查普曼12月8日下午就见到了列侬，并请他在唱片上签名留念，如果他有预谋要杀害列侬的话，当时完全就可以动手。

然而当晚查普曼判若两人，是因为他被人"编程"了，其手段就是通过药物控制和催眠，他当时脑子里不停回响的那个神秘声音，就是被人催眠所造成的有力证据。布雷斯勒认为，对查普曼进行催眠进而控制其射杀列农的幕后黑手就是美国中央情报局，这次事件是一次彻头彻尾的政治暗杀。

芬顿・布雷斯认为，查普曼精神上没有异常之处，也没有刺杀列侬的动机，而他突然失常做出的暴行正是被人催眠控制了。布雷斯勒甚至认为，催眠的关键口令就是《麦田里的守望者》一书中的那个词"守望者"。

事后，大众对这件血案的普遍看法是：马克・查普曼患有严重的精神分裂，他的疯狂导致了枪击的发生。查普曼后来的言谈似乎也证明了这一点。

"当他走过我的身边时，我突然听到一个男人的声音在我脑袋里不停回响：'干掉他，干掉他，干掉他！'这个声音不停地催促我，一遍又一遍，'动手啊，动手啊，干掉他！'"狱中的马克・查普曼对前来采访的英国BBC记者这样回忆，"我不记得我事先是否瞄准了列侬，我只是连续扣动了手枪的扳机，好像是5次，就这样发生了。之后我没有任何情绪波动，没有任何愤怒，我的脑袋里死一般的寂静。"然而，也有一些人对这个解释不以为然，他们各执一词，认为事情绝没有这么简单。

枪杀列侬让查普曼一夜"成名"，报纸上的他一脸单纯，完全不像凶手。
